Child Assistance and the Making of Modern Refugee Camps in Austria-Hungary during the First World War

Abstract This article explores the development of modern refugee camps in Austria-Hungary during First World War by looking at organization and implementation child assistance camps. The argues that a state-driven mobilization relief rehabilitation was organized to alleviate plight children. It points particularly children's health care education as instances marked shift scope wartime Austria-Hungary. At first, represented temporary measure immobilize control displaced populations. As war progressed, they became permanent feature policy microcosm agendas state consolidation. Ultimately, case shows fluid gradual process meshed technologies population containment with humanitarian welfare practices.
